We do all the
exercises to keep our body healthy and fit. What about our brain? Does it
require some habits to keep it functioning properly?
A strong memory
depends on the health and vitality of our brain. There are lot of things you
can do to improve your memory and mental performance.
Give your Brain Workout:
The more you work out your brain the better you will be able
to process and remember information. Memory activities that engage all levels
of brain operation help to improve the function of brain.
Brains will be developed in such a way that helps you
process information quickly, solve familiar problems and execute familiar tasks
with a minimum of mental effort. So if you stick on similar paths, you are not
giving your brain the stimulation it needs to keep growing and developing. So
we have to change our task from time to time.
The best brain activities should break your routine and
challenge the brain to use new pathways. Playing a musical instrument, juggling,
enjoying a game of table tennis, making pottery, knitting, or needlework are
activities that exercise the brain by challenging hand-eye coordination,
spatial-temporal reasoning, and creativity.

Work Your Body:
Exercise does not just work your body; it also improves the
fitness of your brain. Treating your body well can enhance your ability to
process and recall information. In fact, regular physical activity seems to
help slow or even reverse the brains physical decay over time.
Even briefly exercising for 20 minutes facilitates
information processing and memory functions. But it’s not just that–exercise
actually helps your brain create those new neural connections faster. You will
learn faster, your alertness level will increase, and you get all that by
moving your body.
Eat a brain boosting diet:
Healthy diet is important to keep our brain also healthy. We
all know that diet based on fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, healthy
fats and lean protein will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can
also improve memory. But for brain health, it’s not just what you eat—it’s also
what you don’t eat.
Eat more Fruits and
Vegetables: These are packed with antioxidant, substances that protect your
brain cells from damage. Try leafy green vegetables like spinach, broccoli,
lettuce, Swiss chard and fruits such as banana, apricots, mangoes and water
melon.
Get your Omega-3: This
is very essential for brain health. Fish is a major source of Omega-3 fatty
acids. PliƩ your plate with salmon, tuna and other ocean dwellers at least a
couple of times in a week. If you are not a fan of fish try the other sources
such as broccoli, walnuts, kidney beans, pumpkin seeds and soybeans.
Drink Green Tea: Green
tea contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that protect against free
radicals that can damage brain cells. Among many other benefits, regular
consumption of green tea may enhance memory and mental alertness and slow brain
aging.
Spend Time with your loved ones:
Interacting with others may be the best kind of brain
exercise. If you want intellectual abilities, then you have got to have
meaningful relationships in your life. Talking with others and engaging with your
loved ones helps you think more clearly, and it can also lift your mood.
There are many ways to start taking advantage of the brain
and memory-boosting benefits of socializing. Volunteer, join a club, and make
it a point to see friends more often, or reach out over the phone. And if a
human isn’t handy, don’t overlook the value of a pet—especially the
highly-social dog.
De-Stress:
One of brains worst enemies is stress. If left unchecked it
destroys brain cells and the region of the brain involved in the formation of
new memories and retrieval of old ones.
Whatever form your relaxation takes, it will ultimately help
you to be smarter in the long run. Laughter is one of the best medicines to de
stress yourself. Also, laughter engages multiple regions across the brain. Look
for ways and bring some laugh in your life.
Meditation works its “magic” by changing the actual brain.
Brain images show that regular meditators have more activity in the left
prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain associated with feelings of joy and
equanimity. Meditation also increases the thickness of the cerebral cortex and
encourages more connections between brain cells—all of which increases mental
sharpness and memory ability.
